How to use Ritalin

Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking methylphenidate and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually 2 or 3 times a day. This medication is best taken 30 to 45 minutes before a meal. However, if you have stomach upset, you may take this medication with or after a meal or snack. Taking this medication late in the day may cause trouble sleeping (insomnia).

Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may direct you to gradually increase or decrease your dose. Also, if you have used it for a long time, do not suddenly stop using this drug without consulting your doctor.

If you suddenly stop using this medication, you may have withdrawal symptoms (such as depression, suicidal thoughts, or other mental/mood changes). To help prevent withdrawal, your doctor may lower your dose slowly. Withdrawal is more likely if you have used methylphenidate for a long time or in high doses. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you have withdrawal.

When used for a long time, this medication may not work as well. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well.

Though it helps many people, this medication may sometimes cause addiction. This risk may be higher if you have a substance use disorder (such as overuse of or addiction to drugs/alcohol). Take this medication exactly as prescribed to lower the risk of addiction. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Was prescribed Concerta ER 27 mg to start, now up to 54 mg. This drug has significantly changed my life for the better, the lack of motivation to do schoolwork and chores has been eliminated. Dealt with ADHD for more than 8 years before I finally brought it up with my parents. Can’t believe how much this drug has positively impacted my life.

Does methylphenidate improve academic performance? I am feeling Improved In Math

  7. Good Stimulant

As stimulant drugs, methylphenidate and the methylphenidate-based drugs can make you feel very ‘up’, awake, excited, alert, and energized, but they can also make you feel agitated and aggressive. They may also stop you from feeling hungry.

Recently had my Ritalin increased to 20 mg per day. I also take Concerta 36 mg in the morning. Since the dosage increase from 10mg to 20mg, I am much more focused and able to do more stuff. I still get stuck on the computer even though I should get out more but that could be my depression. Still better progress than compared to 3 months ago.

A 27yr-old Australian guy who suffers from severe clinical depression and general anxiety. On Lexapro 80mg/daily and Remeron/Avanzo 45mg/nightly. Over a month ago my psych had mentioned to me about adding Ritalin to the mix as he had had good results with other patients in helping with depression to remove the negative feelings and also help me to organize and concentrate on my life-one thing at a time. It’s over 1-month now, and I take 30 mg a day and my life has changed! It’s a wonder drug for depression and literally leaves you feeling confident and in control, and gives you that extra energy to do things. Not only that, but it makes me into that “normal” person and gives me that “normal person” energy. I think it’s great, I love it, and highly recommend it to any really depressed patient to ask their Dr or Psych to see if they can add it to their arsenal of drugs against your depression. Used alone, it wouldn’t work. But along with an anti-depressant(s) – it’s certainly worth a shot

I was diagnosed with ADHD back in middle school, but never actually began taking medication due to healthcare limitations. Elementary through high school was pretty much a nightmare. I struggled and barely graduated each time. I tried college for a year and a half and dropped out because I couldn’t focus on the workload. Also, I developed social anxiety in large groups. I dropped out, spent 5 years in the Marine Corps, then tried going back to college. I began having the same difficulties I had in the past and decided to get evaluated for ADHD again. Furthermore, I take 20 mg per day, occasionally more if I need it, and my life has done a 180. I’m confident and even comfortable being around people now. Likewise, I can focus on my homework for hours on end and have begun getting much better grades. Most importantly, because I can get my work done on time, I have much more free time to enjoy my life. I would definitely recommend trying the medication for anyone who believes they have ADHD. Not everyone’s brain works the same way, and there’s no shame in requiring medication to function at a healthy level.

I’ve had severe depression and suicidal feelings almost all the time since I was about 13. I’m 27 now and this year have tried Ritalin for focus. It has not only helped me with my school work at college, but gives me more energy, confidence, and my depression seems to go away. It does wear off throughout the day, but it’s nice to have for at least the daytime. I would recommend it, it couldn’t hurt to try it (at least that’s how I feel). Ask your doctor about this.

This medicine really helps me out a lot. Have switched back and forth to Adderall here n’ there, but this is my #1 choice. Started taking this med in 2015 and have not stopped. Without it, I am a complete mess and scatter-brained as a moron dits. So, yes the only negative thing is if you take too many a day, you will get a severe headache. I take mine as prescribed and going to continue doing so. It helps with my depression too. Since it’s a short-lived pill, also take Cymbalta for depression. -Thanks immune-shades

I’ve been on Prozac for a couple of years for depression. After the birth of my 4th child, I became more depressed than ever. I have prescribed Ritalin with the Prozac. What a great difference! I was more focused, and had a little more energy than I had before. The depression was totally gone, and still is. Three years later, I’m still taking both medications, and feeling fine. I don’t know any long-term effects, but I do know that I’m one happy mother!
